General welfare guidance

This article is educational and is not a substitute for veterinary advice. If an animal appears weak, confused, collapses, has difficulty breathing, or you suspect heat illness, seek urgent professional veterinary help.

Make water easy to reach

Keep fresh water available and check it regularly. For animals spending time outdoors, place water in shaded locations and refresh it as needed.

Shift activity to cooler hours

For dogs, walks and active play are generally more comfortable earlier in the morning or later in the evening. Hot pavement can also be uncomfortable for paws, so choose cooler surfaces and shorter outings when temperatures are high.

Provide shade and ventilation

Outdoor shade should remain useful as the sun moves. Indoors, keep resting areas ventilated and allow dogs and cats to choose cooler surfaces or rooms.

Never rely on a parked vehicle

A parked vehicle can become dangerously hot very quickly, even when the outside temperature does not feel extreme. Do not leave a dog or cat unattended in a vehicle.

Remember that cats feel the heat too

Cats may become quieter and seek cool floors or shaded spaces. Keep water accessible, avoid unnecessary handling during very hot periods and make sure enclosed rooms are not becoming overly warm.

Watch the individual animal

Age, coat, body condition, breed traits and health can all change how an animal handles heat. Adjust routines for the individual rather than assuming one schedule suits every dog or cat.

Bear Tails Welfare seasonal reminder

Small preventive choices can make warm days safer: water, shade, cooler timing, rest and quick action when an animal appears unwell.
